Investigating

NHS Digital have identified a security vulnerability in the current version of the NHS Identity Agent, which manages the smartcards used on our computers. A new version of the software is now available and will be rolled out to all computers today.

What to Expect During Installation

The installation should be quick, but it may interrupt your smartcard session and any smartcard-based applications, including:

• e-Referral Service

• SystmOne

• eCare (via smartcard)

Specific Impacts

• eCare users: Your current session may close unexpectedly.

• SystmOne users: You will only be affected if your session expires, or you log out.

What to Do If You're Affected

If your smartcard session is interrupted:

  1. Open the Windows Start Menu.
  2. Type "Identity Agent" and click the application.
  3. Reauthenticate using your smartcard.

If issues persist, please reboot your computer. This will force the Identity Agent to reload and should resolve the problem.
